Doctoral researcher position in solid-state NMR spectroscopy of semiconductor materials

In the solid-state NMR group at the Erlangen Center for Interface Research and Catalysis at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, a position for a doctoral researcher (m/f/d, 75 % TV-L E13) is available.

About the position

The research project of the PhD thesis will be centered on the structural investigation of semiconductor materials by solid-state NMR spectroscopy. In close collaboration with groups in chemistry and material science, we will investigate semiconductors generated by new, chemically controlled techniques, to understand their nucleation and growth mechanisms, defects and surface interactions. Solid-state NMR method development will be central to investigate semiconductor materials at high temperatures and under light irradiation.

Our team operates a 500 MHz spectrometer, various Magic Angle Spinning (MAS) probes, an MAS probe for high temperature experiments under gas flow, and a probe for light irradiation under MAS. A broad range of analytic techniques including X-ray diffraction, EPR spectroscopy, vibrational spectroscopy and physisorption techniques are available. Access to a wide range of other instrumentation is provided by a strong network of collaborations.

Your qualifications

You hold, or will soon obtain, a university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related subject, and have achieved competitive grades. You have a strong interest and preliminary experience in solid-state NMR spectroscopy, chemistry and material science. You are able to work well in an interdisciplinary team, you have a high level of independence and diligence, and you can present your ideas and results to a broad scientific audience. You are proficient in English, proficiency in German is beneficial though not essential.

About the Collaborative Research Center 1719 “ChemPrint”

The project is part of the Collaborative Research Center 1719 “ChemPrint. Next-generation printed semiconductors: Atomic level engineering via molecular surface chemistry”, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The (post)doctoral researcher in this position will be a member of the integrated Research Training Group (iRTG) of CRC 1719 within the Graduate School “Engineering of Advanced Materials”. This framework offers to the (post)doctoral researchers a strong network for interdisciplinary collaboration and training, dual mentoring, the possibility for a research exchange in international institutions, and opportunities for your own personal and professional development.

Equal opportunities statement

The Friedrich-Alexander Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg welcomes your application regardless of your age, gender, cultural and social background, religion, ideology, disability or sexual identity. We strive for gender equality, and expressly encourage women to apply. Severely disabled persons will be given preferential consideration if their suitability, performance and qualifications are essentially equal.

How to Apply

The position is to be filled as soon as possible. To apply, please contact Dr. Dorothea Wisser (dorothea.wisser@fau.de). Your application should include a motivation letter, a CV, a list of publications, the contact of a referee, and copies of your degrees and your grades.
